History and Background 

VSSU is an NGO registered under the Societies Registration Act.  It is based in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, which is in the North-East part of India and working as   regional   level   of    organization   with   a   National   &       International    level    network    at    present.    Promotion of  Voluntary Institutions in pursuing primary education program for the children of deprived & neglected communities along with community level health promotion & social forestry programs were few of the activities as part of its preliminary phase of intervention during 1983 with an aim of socio-economic development of target communities so far as the programs of VSSU & its history is concerned.

 VSSU which has been involved in several developmental projects in the state West Bengal, especially in the district of 24 Parganas (South) adjacent to Sundarban Island area, over the past 23 years has undertaken the correction of the above anomalies as a mission. The objectives of VSSU is to provide divine Mission to severe the disadvantaged and underprivileged, blend government programs for Rural Development with voluntary effort and giving access to basic minimum services in a self-sustaining environment is Rural west Bengal. The priority areas of the Organization are Livelihood Development through Micro enterprises, pre-education for rural child, community health, plantation (Avenue), capacity building, women empowerment and micro Credit Program for rural poor people.

VSSU Today

Within a span of 12 years i.e. in 1995, it initiated with a unique approach known as intervention of Micro Finance (mf) program with the aim of economic empowerment of people of locality  alongside   a   range   of  social development    programs as explained earlier lines including  community level infrastructure development with the   participation   of people. So far as the history of Micro Finance program of VSSU is concerned, it has generated its Finance from local sources through mobilizing client savings rather depending upon any external sources till 2001. The sincerity of its approach and hard work of its team members is in a position now to mobilize external finances for the economic development of people. SIDBI is one of the nationalized bank of India is the key resource provider in promotion of mF program of VSSU.

 In the present context, VSSU and its mF intervention are in its expansion phase and the coverage of whole program has been extended to NINE blocks, 30 Gram Panchayats and 237 villages in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. As the MFI of VSSU, it is providing financial services in remote rural areas covering of 30 Gram Panchayats and 43324 clients in total.
